Summer Tree Cutting Tips: Keep Your Littleton Trees Safe and Strong

admin tree services
tree trimming in Littleton CO

As summer kicks off in Littleton, Colorado, property owners shift their focus from spring cleanup to maintaining their landscapes during the hot, dry months ahead. One of the most critical steps you can take to protect your home and yard is proactive tree cutting. While trees offer shade and beauty, unchecked growth, deadwood, and structural weaknesses can quickly turn into hazards. In this blog post, we’ll explore why summer is an important time for tree cutting, what problems you can prevent, and how John Egart’s Tree Service helps Littleton homeowners and property managers keep their trees safe and strong all season long.

tree trimming in Littleton CO

Why Tree Cutting Matters in the Summer

During summer, trees in Littleton are under stress from heat, drought, and storms. Dead branches become brittle, weak limbs sag with heavy foliage, and pests or disease can take hold without warning. Cutting during this time allows you to:

  • Remove hazardous limbs before they break
  • Promote airflow through the canopy, reducing mold and mildew
  • Stop the spread of decay or disease
  • Shape trees to maintain a safe distance from roofs and power lines
  • Maintain strong, balanced tree structure

Tree Cutting vs. Tree Trimming: What’s the Difference?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, they serve different purposes:

  • Tree Trimming refers to light pruning, typically for shape, aesthetics, or to remove small dead limbs.
  • Tree Cutting involves the removal of larger limbs or full sections of a tree to address safety, health, or structural concerns.

During summer, tree cutting is often more important than light trimming because structural stability and storm resilience take priority.

Common Summer Tree Hazards in Littleton

Littleton is home to a wide variety of tree species including maples, elms, ash, pines, and cottonwoods. Each presents unique risks:

  • Cottonwoods grow large, brittle limbs that snap during windstorms
  • Ash trees are highly vulnerable to emerald ash borer
  • Pines may hide dead sections inside dense foliage
  • Maples and elms may suffer from sunscald and split trunks if overgrown

Without summer maintenance, trees can become overburdened by their own growth, increasing the risk of damage during July thunderstorms or dry spells.

What to Cut and What to Leave

Not every branch should go. Proper tree cutting requires understanding how a tree will respond. Our certified arborists at John Egart’s Tree Service assess:

  • Dead or dying limbs with no leaf growth
  • Branches overhanging structures, driveways, or play areas
  • Crossed or rubbing limbs that may break during high winds
  • Overextended limbs growing too far from the trunk

What we typically leave:

  • Strong, healthy central branches
  • New growth that supports balance
  • Shaded limbs not causing structural stress

The Role of Professional Tree Cutting Services

DIY tree cutting can lead to injury, damage, or even death of a healthy tree. John Egart’s Tree Service offers:

  • Certified Arborists trained to evaluate structural integrity
  • Proper equipment to reach and safely cut large limbs
  • Debris removal and cleanup, including grapple truck service for large jobs

This service is especially popular among HOAs, property managers, and larger residential lots.

May in Aurora, CO brings longer days, blooming landscapes, and unfortunately, the beginning of storm season. With high winds, heavy rain, and the occasional late snowfall, your trees can quickly become a liability if not properly maintained. At John Egart’s Tree Service, we help Aurora residents prepare their trees to weather the season safely and beautifully.

Understanding the Risks of Spring Storms in Aurora Aurora’s unpredictable spring weather poses unique challenges for trees. Wind shear, lightning strikes, and saturated soil can all lead to uprooted trees, snapped limbs, and fallen branches. These hazards threaten not only your property but also the safety of your family, tenants, or customers.

The biggest risks include:

  • Overextended branches breaking in strong winds
  • Diseased or dead trees toppling unexpectedly
  • Limbs falling onto roofs, power lines, or vehicles
  • Hidden structural damage from winter that worsens under pressure

Proactive trimming and timely tree removal dramatically reduce these threats.

Why Tree Trimming is Essential Before Storm Season Trimming isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about protection. In May, trees are actively growing and starting to fill out with foliage. This extra weight can increase the likelihood of limb breakage during storms.

Benefits of pre-storm tree trimming:

  • Removes weak or dead branches that can easily snap
  • Balances canopy weight to reduce stress during wind
  • Prevents branches from rubbing or splitting
  • Improves tree structure and reduces debris risk

Our certified arborists assess each tree’s health and structure, using industry best practices to trim for safety and longevity.

When Tree Removal Becomes Necessary Some trees are simply beyond saving. Diseased, dead, or severely damaged trees can become high-risk hazards if not removed in time. Signs a tree may need removal include:

  • Visible rot at the base or in major limbs
  • Hollow or cracking trunks
  • Trees leaning more than 15 degrees
  • No new leaf growth in spring
  • Bark sloughing off in large patches

Removing a compromised tree before it falls prevents property damage and liability. John Egart’s Tree Service offers safe, efficient removals including cleanup and debris hauling.

Using Grapple Truck Service for Storm Prep and Cleanup A key advantage we offer in Aurora is our grapple truck service — a specialized piece of equipment ideal for handling large limbs, heavy trunks, and storm debris. This service allows us to:

  • Remove large fallen branches quickly
  • Handle oversized trees and stumps safely
  • Reduce labor time and lower overall project costs
  • Clear multiple properties efficiently after storms

Grapple trucks are especially useful for HOAs, apartment complexes, and large residential lots with extensive tree coverage.

How John Egart’s Tree Service Prepares Aurora for Storm Season We offer a complete storm prep service tailored to the Aurora area:

  • On-site evaluations of tree health and storm risk

  • Strategic tree removals before problems arise

Why Timing Matters in May Waiting until mid-summer to deal with tree issues can be too late. May is the window when trees are most receptive to trimming, and the risks of sudden storms begin to climb. Acting now prevents emergency situations later.

Plus, our schedule books up fast as demand increases across Aurora. Don’t wait until the first windstorm causes damage — take a proactive approach.

Let Us Help You Weather the Storm With May storms looming, now is the time to take action. Whether you need targeted trimming, a complete tree removal, or large-scale debris hauling, John Egart’s Tree Service has the equipment, expertise, and commitment to protect your property.

Learn About Tree Watering

Expert Tree Watering Services For Your Thirsty Trees In Colorado

Why do you need to water trees in Denver CO?

Dry air, low precipitation, little soil moisture, and fluctuating temperatures are characteristics of fall and winter in many areas of Colorado. Often there is little or no snow cover to provide soil moisture from October through March. Trees, shrubs, perennials and lawns under these conditions may be damaged if they do not receive supplemental water.

The result of long, dry periods during fall and winter is injury or death to parts of plant root systems. Affected plants may appear perfectly normal and resume growth in the spring using stored food energy. Plants may be weakened and all or parts may die in late spring or summer when temperatures rise. Weakened plants also may be subject to insect and disease problems.

Some facts about watering trees and other plants in Colorado:

  • Water trees, shrubs, lawns, and perennials during prolonged dry fall and winter periods to prevent root damage that affects the health of the entire plant.
  • Water only when air and soil temperatures are above 40 degrees F with no snow cover.
  • Established large trees have a root spread equal to or greater than the height of the tree. Apply water to the most critical part of the root zone within the dripline.

We are a local Denver area reputable tree service company whose watering services are renowned for our ability to handle even the toughest job. Whether it is for your commercial or residential property, we use cutting-edge equipment to help increase your property value as well as your curb appeal.

Have A Big Tree In A Tight Place?

Crane Tree Removals Are A Specialty Of Ours!

Crane Service Tree Removal

Have you ever seen and wondered how do they get that big tree out of that tight space?

Some jobs require the use of a crane to safely remove large trees in tight spots.

Tree damage to your property can be prevented with crane assisted tree removal services.

Removing trees in Denver CO with the assistance of a crane is hands down the safest way to remove large trees in tight spaces. Traditional tree removal methods can't remove trees in tight spaces next to structures. Large trees in tight spaces require complex rigging and lowering to avoid obstacles and in certain situations they have inferior results compared to the crane assisted tree removal process. When a crane is used in the tree removal process it greatly reduces the amount of time that it takes to remove the tree and it also decreases the impact to the surroundings. When using a crane we are able to provide a safe and efficient no impact tree removal in the tightest of spaces. Sometimes a tree grows very large next to a structure and the only way to safely remove it is with the use of a crane.

Jim and Betty Thompson called us because they had a tree that was dropping large limbs in their yard. After arriving to their home in Denver, CO we checked the tree's health to see if it could be saved. Unfortunately the tree had become infested with beetles and needed to be removed. The Thompson's liked the shade the tree gave them but liked the idea of having more of their backyard available for their children to play in more. They hired us to remove the tree and due to the proximity of the home the tree was not able to be reached by our bucket and crane trucks so that we could remove it in sections. This is a dangerous climb so it was great to be able to use the bucket and crane trucks. Bugs that have damaged a tree can damage the core thus weakening the top of the tree. This could result in the tree breaking off while we are up in it and leading to a very bad day for our climber. Thankfully we were able to take the tree down without any problems thanks to our crane assisted tree removal service.

The Denver Tree Removal Guide

Nestled in the picturesque state of Colorado, Denver is home to many tree species that add to the city's vibrant landscape. However, there are situations where the removal of a tree becomes necessary, whether it be due to disease, potential danger to structures, or landscaping purposes. In this three-part guide, we delve into what every Denver resident should know about tree removal, from understanding the basics and the process to familiarizing oneself with the city's tree removal regulations.

Introduction to Tree Removal in Denver, Colorado

Tree removal refers to the process of cutting down a tree, typically carried out by skilled professionals. It's not a decision taken lightly and usually results from various factors that necessitate this action. In Denver, homeowners may choose to remove a tree for several reasons:

  • Structural Risks: Trees growing too close to homes or power lines pose a significant risk. During severe weather conditions, limbs or the entire tree can fall, causing substantial damage.
  • Tree Diseases: Denver is host to various tree species and, unfortunately, several tree diseases as well. Conditions like Dutch Elm Disease or Emerald Ash Borer infestation can damage trees beyond recovery, leaving removal the only option.
Land Usage Changes: Sometimes, land development projects require the removal of trees.

However, tree removal is more complex than picking up a chainsaw and cutting down the tree. A significant amount of knowledge and numerous precautions must be considered. Additionally, the variety of tree species in Denver - from Blue Spruce to Quaking Aspen - demands different removal methods. Therefore, consulting with a tree service professional is crucial to decide the best course of action.

The Process of Tree Removal in Denver, Colorado

The process of tree removal is far from simple. It requires careful planning, precision, safety measures, and, quite often, specialized equipment. Professionals follow several critical steps in the tree removal process:

  • Assessment: The first step involves a thorough risk assessment. The tree's size, health, and proximity to structures are evaluated. This assessment helps determine the safest and most effective removal method.
  • Preparation: Safety measures are implemented to protect workers and nearby structures. The equipment, ranging from chainsaws to cranes, is prepared for use.
  • Cutting and Felling: Different methods may be employed for cutting down the tree depending on the assessment. The aim is to guide the tree to fall in the safest direction.
  • Removal: Once the tree is down, it's cut into manageable sections for easier removal. Sometimes, the stump may also be removed or ground into mulch.
  • Cleanup: The final step involves the cleanup of the site. Often, the tree is recycled into useful materials like firewood or mulch.
Remember, each tree is unique, and so is its removal process. Always seek help from professionals equipped to handle such tasks safely and efficiently.

Old stumps can be a nuisance. Stump grind those old stumps into mulch.

The sight of a stump definitely isn't appealing in the Denver CO area. If you're meticulous about your yard and landscaping, removing the stump is a must. Tree stumps can be a hazard in your yard if you have kids playing and can damage lawn mowing equipment. If that isn't enough leaving an old stump can lead to new tree growth. New sprouts can literally start popping up everywhere. An old decaying stump will attract insects to your yard. When you leave stumps in your lawn, the decaying tree takes a long time to rot away completely. While it's decaying, the stump attracts beetles, termites, ants and other wood-boring pests. You may not mind them in your yard, but they can eventually spread to your home.

Upon removal of a tree an owner may choose to have the stump grinded away. The process of stump grinding is achieved using a high rpm stump grinding machine which processes your stump into fine wood chips which return to your soil as mulch. Stumps are traditionally grinded 8-10” below existing soil grade. Root pruning is often desirable to stop the spread of trouble roots near houses, fences or concrete.

When you hire us you hire the stump removal experts in the Denver area. We are licensed, insured, and have years of stump removal experience.

Stump Grinding FAQs

How do you remove a stump?
We used specialized machinery to grind the stump into wood chips.

What do I do with the wood chips?
We rake all the chips into a pile. Most of the time, they will settle to ground level.

How deep can you grind the stump?
We can grind stumps up to 15 inches deep, depending on which one of our machines we use.

What about buried utilities and irrigation lines?
We take every precaution to avoid cables and irrigation lines but the homeowner is responsible to advise us where the irrigation lines and sprinkler heads are. If we are not comfortable with where the utilities are, we will call to have them located. Sometimes it is not possible to save the irrigation lines and grind the stump too.

How small or large of a stump can you grind?
We can grind any size stump as long as our machine has access to it.

How close to a fence or house can you grind?
Generally, within inches.

How much access do you need to get to the stump?
We need at least a 3 foot wide access point to get to a stump with our smaller machine. This machine is also small enough and light enough to remove any stumps inside a pool deck.

Will the machine hurt my yard or damage sidewalks and driveways?
Our machines will not hurt driveways or sidewalks. They are lighter than most vehicles. Only a yard that is very wet from heavy rains will retain a small impression from our machines. Under normal conditions, there will be no marks in the yard at all.
